Topographic surveys are used to identify and map the contours of the ground and existing features on the surface of the earth or slightly above or below the earth’s surface as needed. Features may include trees, buildings, streets, walkways, retaining walls, utility poles, water lines, sewer lines, storm drainage structures and so on. Often times, topographic surveys are used by design professionals, such as civil engineers and architects, in order to design a residence or building, or perhaps design a new street or retaining wall. When used this way, they serve as a “base map” and can be invaluable in making sure that the structure is designed to fit real world conditions. A detailed topographic survey can be the first step in making sure that there are no “hidden” problems that would cause the project to be over or under designed or lead to cost overruns.
